Nice cinematography!

Something interesting I found on the web:

Musicvideo for Scissor Sisters Invisible Light contains very authentic late 70s horror movie feel to it. Cinematography is spot on making for making this look like the real thing. Combined with imagery reminiscent of Dario Argento’s films and you get very intriguing 4 minute trip into some well produced madness.

Warning: Might be NSFW!

Few shots from the mist

When I woke up it was darker than usual. Look out from the window confirmed the reason for this being the lingering fog. Skipping the normal morning routines like the normally essential jug of coffee, I rushed out with my camera, hoping that the fog would last long enough for decent photos.

Beach near the Forever

Unfortunately, fog was retrieving while I approached the area I had scouted previously. There was enough of it for few shots, but my plans for testing light painting in the fog were ruined.

Geese and the reeds
Also, I think that this geese planned to sneak up upon me and kill me.

Photos from beyond the C-drive: Puurula

While testing out the new Photoshop, I came up with an idea to upload new drafts of my old photos. You know, dig little into the past, look what worked and what did not, and see if I can do things better with newer, better post processing tools.

First we look at photo of Joni Puurula. He is (or was) a goalkeeper for local ice hockey team, Vaasa Sport. Shot was taken for Vaasan Sport official hockey magazine (3rd of March 2011).

Basically I had very little time to prepare for this shoot, if I recall correctly, enough time to fast recharge the batteries on my strobes. Idea for photo was that he is like a brick wall and photo elements would convey that. Luckily near by just a perfect under pass for this. There was slush every where, but not in this location – it still looked like winter. It was quite warm and sun was bright enough to be a problem.

Shots were taken near a bridge that could be used to control the sun light a bit. I used 50mm lens and 2 strobes with light blue and yellow/orange gels, trying to get warm skin tones and cold blue surroundings. Shot above was not picked by the editor, but I think that out of the articles context, this one works better.

First impressions of the Photoshop CS6

It is been released a while ago, but yesterday I got my copy. First thing I noticed that it feels lighter than CS5 – a lot lighter. Second thing I noted was that Picasa still seems to be faster to use than Bridge. This opinion might change when I start to do some video projects again.

It is easier to pull more colors and tones from photos with new Camera Raw and chromatic correction among other seems to do better job. I played with few older photos and managed to get, IMHO better drafts from them as before. I still have not figured out why “Oil paint” –filter has such a prominent placement in the menus. Why it is not behind the filter gallery? Also, I haven’t figured why Iris- and tilt-shift-blur are added.

So, it seems like case of little improvements combined with better UI and much better feel. It might be a case of my excitement for new program, but I am happy with this. I will post more thoughts of Photoshop CS6 later.

Tuesday’s picture picks

Here are few pictures that caught my eye while surfing the waves of the interweb.

sun by MecuroBCotto
Beautiful mysterious picture that teases my imagination.

No idea who is the photographer of this photo and long google-fu battle revealed only a possibility that it is from Donna Karan ad campaign. So if you know more, please comment. Like in previous photo we have nice smoky, mysterious mood but with good contrast and saturated colors. Blue tones are in nice contrast with orange/yellow light. Damn, I wish I could find hi-res version of this…

Another case of missing photographer, so if you have any info, drop a line in the comments. I do know that it is a promotional shot from Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner and person in the photo is Rutger Hauer. Raindrops that look like sparks combined with Roy’s mad look, makes this interesting piece. I need to find out how you can create those kinds of water sparks without electrocuting the models…

I usually hate pictures with selective desaturation, but this is something different. Dark toned nature of the image leaves me wondering what goes behind those glazed, water color eyes.

We start from the woods

Woods

Photo by me. And so it begins, like many stories around these parts, in the woods. Shot on a foggy gray day, little past the noon. I wanted to make viewer feel the strange sensation that you get when surrounded by the fog
